The Surgical Services Department at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland recently upgraded their storage in the operating room core and replaced more than 70 wire carts with seven small Spacesaver mobile systems. The old wire carts were tearing holes in supplies and also inefficient on space utilization. There was wasted space between and in front of carts, as well as unutilized space between shelves. It was difficult to store small instruments and when items were stacked high to better utilize shelf space, they were unmanageable. Seven powered mobile systems are in the OR core for storing sterile supplies, cases and instruments for surgery. All of the mobile systems have drawers for small items such as soft goods, syringes, and catheters. Shelf openings maximize space while still accommodating large items such as surgery cases that are brought up each day for scheduled surgeries. Clear end panels make items visible and easy to locate quickly. Sutures are stored on open, slanted shelving on the end of the large central core supply unit. Storage solutions (design, layout and installation) provided by Paul Leatherman, STORAGELogic, in conjunction with Spacesaver Corporation.
