While planning construction for a new headquarters, it didn’t take long for the City of Franklin Police Department in Franklin, Tennessee to realize they simply needed more space. “We had so many areas of the headquarters that needed a serious storage overhaul,” says Sgt. David Prather. “From evidence to locker rooms to records to weapons.” To add to the challenge, Prather says that neither the police department nor the general contractor they were working with knew anything about planning for efficient and effective storage.

Then, Sgt. Prather and members of his department met with Al Stewart, a sales representative with Patterson Pope, one of Spacesaver’s authorized distributors. In addition to “stuff storage” solutions for each one of the City of Franklin’s challenges—the evidence room, the SWAT room, the records room—attention was especially paid to the men and women’s locker rooms. In these areas, Spacesaver worked with Stewart to create a custom designed ventilation system that moved air from the bottom of the 245 FreeStyle Personal Storage Lockers through the top to a central exhaust duct as the end of each locker row. These ventilated gear lockers aided in drying officer gear and, by extension, eliminating odors.

Police Department Storage Solutions

In addition to the custom ventilated gear lockers in the locker rooms, other storage solutions included:

  • A powered high-density mobile shelving system with many doors and drawers for jewelry and other small items in the Evidence Room;
  • A mechanical-assist mobile shelving system in the Records Room;
  • A manual mobile shelving system in the Drug Room;
  • Evidence storage solutions, including refrigerated pass-thru evidence lockers;
  • Additional secure storage lockers in the SWAT Room
  • Flush-mounted pistol lockers throughout the facility;
  • Universal Weapons Racks in five different areas of the facility, and
  • widespan shelving storage in multiple areas to support the storage of heavy and/or bulky items.

From the custom ventilated gear lockers to the weapons racks, the result for Franklin Police Department was an integrated storage system that not only maximizes available space, but also boosts company morale. “Our facility is now recognized as a model police headquarters,” Prather says. “We never realized how important storage components can be and just what a difference a good system makes.”
