<h3>Attacking Pharmaceutical Clutter Halfway Around the World</h3>
<p>
Nearly 4,400 miles from its headquarters, <a href="/military" aria-label="military storage solutions">Spacesaver’s military storage solutions</a> are making a difference for the United States Air Force (USAF) base in Stuttgart, Germany. With basement storage that had become a cluttered mess, Patch Barrack’s busy pharmacy was experiencing issues with controlling storage and maintaining quick access to the medications and supplies it housed for the base. </p>

<h3>Identifying the Enemy</h3>
<p>Outdated and inefficient static shelving blocked visibility and failed to provide enough capacity for the growing number of medications needed to be on hand. On top of this, the majority of storage was located in the basement, further lengthening the process of fulfilling residents’ needs. </p>

<h3>Calling In Reinforcements</h3>
<p>Knowing they could use some backup, base officials contacted Spacesaver’s team of storage experts to assess the situation and provide solutions to keep their staff ready for action.</p>
<p>To best accommodate the limited space of the pharmacy’s basement, our installers removed the existing shelving and cleared the area to make room. From there, they installed new flooring, Spacesaver shelving with butcher block work benches, a <a href="/products/specialty-storage/modular-systems" aria-label="modular storage solutions product details">FrameWRX® Storage System</a> with standard and bin shelving, and <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems"  aria-label="high-density mobile system product details">mechanical-assist mobile systems</a> to maximize capacity and organization.</p>

<p>Knowing time is a crucial factor in the medical field, we were able to perform this update over Martin Luther King weekend to avoid disruption in the base’s pharmacy services. The result was a more organized pharmacy with more than double the storage capacity and two additional work areas for staff. </p>

<h2>Honoring a Proud Past, Preparing for Duty</h2>
<p>The Colorado Air National Guard has an extensive and impressive history dating back to 1923 when the 120th Aero Observation Squadron was called to serve alongside the Colorado Army National Guard. In 1946, the Colorado National Guard was officially recognized – one year before the United States Air Force was recognized! Housed at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, CO, the 140th Wing performs multiple training missions each year in preparation for state emergencies and active duty service in times of crisis. While not always active duty, the National Guardsmen – and their equipment – must be ready to be called into action at any time.</p>
<p>During a transition into wartime, The 140th Wing had an immediate need for improved Base Supply Operations and military storage when the base became active duty status. The department took on increased responsibilities for overseeing all of the weapons and mobility bags as the entire wing prepared for a possible deployment.</p>

<h2>Military Storage: Protecting Those Who Protect the Country</h2>
<p>Weapons storage was a particular concern at the Air Force Base. Previously, weapons were stored in locked gun caskets, which typically only hold between one and three weapons inside. The gun caskets were stacked three to four high, which created a major inconvenience for accessing and inventorying weapons. During inventory checks, every casket had to be moved, opened, and accounted for – a major undertaking that was labor-intensive and often took a dozen or more people to accomplish. This also meant taking soldiers away from their day-to-day administrative, training, and preparation activities, resulting in decreased productivity.</p>


<p>Another storage area in need of an overhaul was mobility bag storage. Most Airmen have multiple mobility bags containing specific items such as helmets, body armor, sleeping bags, cold-weather gear, chemical warfare protective suits, and in-flight protective gear. Some of the items in mobility bags have expiration dates, which requires personnel to pull bags and swap out gear at specific times.</p>





<p>When the Colorado Air National Guard became active duty, personnel knew the bags would need to be prepared for short-notice deployments. Misplacing even a few items or bags could put lives in danger. The mobility bags, weighing 30-70 pounds each, were originally stored in large bins stacked three high on standard industrial racking, which required a forklift to access for a deployment. The cumbersome process made it more difficult to ensure that every bag was organized and mission-ready.</p>
<p>When it came time to retrofit storage at the base, Captain Brinkman, the Logistics Readiness Squadron Operations Officer, knew it was time for a different solution. He reached out to a local Spacesaver representative who assessed the space and proposed a solution that included high density mobile military storage, mobile cubbies, and a series of Universal Weapons Racks.</p>

<h2>Weapons Storage Ensures Firearms are Safe, Damage-Free</h2>
<p>In the weapons storage area, Universal Weapons Racks were mounted onto high density mobile carriages to allow for maximum security and space savings. By configuring the inside of the Weapons Racks to the exact specifications of their weapons, the base can now store up to 820 M16s and 140 9mm weapons – an inventory that collectively is worth over $200,000. The weapons racks make it easy to conduct a visual inventory, requiring only a few hours and one person.</p>

<p>The new weapons racks are also highly secure and keep weapons from being broken or damaged. The logistics team employs a three-tiered security system for all of its firearms including:</p>
<ol>
<li>Locks on the door to the weapons storage room</li>
<li>IDS room security system</li>
<li>Lockable weapons racks</li>
</ol>
<p>“We lost nothing in terms of security and gained extensively in efficiency,” said Senior Master Sergeant John Zenyuch, base supply asset management superintendent. “Even with increased responsibilities, our technician is able to maintain and prepare inventory more efficiently and then have time to take on added responsibilities.”</p>

<h2>Mobility Bag Storage for Operational Readiness</h2>
<p>When it came to storing the bulky mobility bags, a high density shelving system was the answer. By mounting shelves with dividers for each individual bag onto rails, static aisles were eliminated, which created space for all the bags to be stored in one central location. With the push of a button, the shelves easily move over 4,000 mobility bags, as well as space and back-up items for additional bags. Each Airman is assigned a bag and each bag is assigned a storage cubby within the system. The system eliminated the need for the storage bins so that now, during a deployment, bags are located and retrieved in a matter of minutes.</p>
<p>“Having the Spacesaver system for our bag storage has us much better prepared,” said Zenyuch. “They have allowed us to cut down our preparation for deployment from several hours to a matter of minutes.”</p>

<p>The change in storage approach not only saved space, but also encouraged a change in functional operations that resulted in safer storage of supply items and quicker turnaround in mobility operations. Brinkman concluded by saying, “The efficiency we have achieved with the Spacesaver systems is immeasurable. By utilizing compact storage systems, the base is now able to store everything for the entire wing in one central repository. We have more consistency in management and because our operation is so efficient, we’ve been able to remove obstacles for people to get their jobs done and have seen morale boosted.”</p>

The NC National Guard used secure storage lockers to decrease Financial Liability Investigation of Property Loss (FLIPL) investigations and lost equipment.

North Carolina National Guard Prevents FLIPLs

<p>When there is no central location to store the property and equipment used by hundreds of soldiers, keeping track of that equipment can certainly be a challenge. For the North Carolina National Guard, a lack of organized storage meant that many of the soldiers in the Guard were required to store their government-issued gear and equipment in their homes. This often resulted in the loss of government property, and in order to determine whether or not a solider was responsible for this lost equipment, a Financial Liability Investigation of Property Loss (FLIPL) was conducted.</p>
<p>There are many details and steps that go into a FLIPL, but the bottom line is that these investigations can take up valuable time—and at the end, the equipment still needs to be replaced. “We’d rather just have the gear back,” says North Carolina National Guard MSG Joseph Olive. “It can be a very time-consuming process.”</p>

<p>The Guard knew they needed a system in place that ensure accountability and security of equipment in order to avoid FLIPLs—and the solution came in the form of a locker room in each National Guard Readiness Center throughout the entire state. A military study concluded that over 90% of OCIE (Organizational Clothing and Individual Equipment) losses occurred in ranks E1 through E5. By creating these locker rooms, valuable equipment could always remain secure and accounted for.</p>

<p>Through a Request for Quotations for <a href="/products/lockers/gear-locker" aria-label="gear locker product details">gear lockers</a>, Patterson Pope, an authorized Spacesaver distributor, knew they would be able to help the North Carolina National Guard out with this particular storage challenge, having helped the National Guard with other projects pertaining to their CIF (Central Issue Facility) and records storage areas.</p>
<p>In working with the National Guard, it became imperative that the secure storage lockers for these locker rooms needed to meet a unique size requirement, and Patterson Pope reached out to Spacesaver to engineer a custom military storage locker that was built to accommodate large mobility bags and other equipment. The lockers were based on Spacesaver’s standard <a href="/products/lockers/personal-storage-locker" aria-label="personal storage locker product details">FreeStyle Personal Storage Lockers</a> and were outfitted with a perforated mesh door to increase airflow and to obscure the view of the expensive equipment kept inside for added security.</p>

<p>These custom, secure storage lockers have been installed in a variety of National Guard locations throughout the state, and the locker rooms have the potential to save the North Carolina National Guard millions of dollars. “Stuff just gets lost in the shuffle sometimes,” MSG Olive says. “This is going to make a big difference for us.”</p>

<h2>Easy, Reconfigurable Storage</h2>
<p>The Central Issue Facility (CIF) at Camp Ripley in Minnesota is an extremely busy place. It ensures an average of 11,000 National Guard soldiers per year have all of the clothing and equipment they need as they train to be mobilized at any time – whether it’s for war or a domestic emergency. And that doesn’t count the soldiers who return to exchange equipment for any number of reasons.</p>
<p>More and more equipment and the changing role of the CIF drove the need to store nearly twice as many items than it did when the pallet racking was originally installed. Yet, despite increased demands on space, a facility expansion wasn’t realistic given the costs. Additionally, the CIF needed to adapt to the changes in real time; long before a facility expansion could be planned, approved and completed.</p>

<p>In assessing the situation, Johnson says the team needed to rethink storage. The use of stationary pallet racking for storing OCIE was no longer viable.</p>
<p>An <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/heavy-duty-mobile-racking" aria-label="heavy duty mobile system product details">ActivRAC 16P mobile racking storage system</a> was designed around the physical space at the CIF and in such a way as to allow quick and easy access. Located behind the counter where soldiers pick up OCIE, it features five mobilized carriages, four of which are 74 feet long. The fifth carriage stretches 93 feet to capitalize on additional room for storage.</p>
<p>To create even more room for OCIE storage, more than 40 vertical file cabinets were replaced with a <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-systems/heavy-duty-mobile-racking" aria-label="heavy duty mobile system product details">mobile storage system</a>.</p>
