<p>This past Veteran’s Day, Spacesaver acknowledged our employees who have served our country, in addition to providing a token of our appreciation for the sacrifice they made. On December 14, one of these valued employees had the opportunity to return the favor to both the company and their respective supervisor. </p>

<h2>How It Started</h2>

<p>Spacesaver’s team of storage experts comprises individuals of all walks of life. For some it is their first job and for others it may be their last, but for one particular employee it most certainly is not their only job, and the other is one to be proud of.</p>

<p>
Just over a year ago, Captain Britta Pokornowski – a member of the Michigan Army National Guard assigned to the Headquarters Company, 107th Engineer Battalion, Ishpeming, MI – joined Spacesaver’s Product Engineering department, led by Brent Rusch, Product Engineering Manager at Spacesaver.</p>

<h3>Answering the Call</h3>
<p>Fully honoring the Guard’s motto of being “Always Ready, Always There”, Pokornowski was required to take leave from her day-to-day at Spacesaver to train and serve with her unit; a fact that Rusch and the rest of her team understood and appreciated. So, when the time came for her to answer the call, she knew she could leave with the confidence that her team at Spacesaver headquarters would hold down the Fort until her return.</p>

<p>“Brent (Rusch) and my teammates have been great about being flexible and covering my duties while I am out for training,” Captain Pokornowski stated. “They have been especially helpful during the additional training requirements this year.”</p>

<h3>An Awarding Reward</h3>
<p>Taking into consideration Rusch’s willingness to help encourage her ability to make an impact both in the office and with her unit, Pokornowski wanted to find a way to honor his efforts. Knowing there were several programs in place through the military to do just that, she <a href="https://www.esgr.mil/Employer-Awards/Patriot-Award" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nominated Rusch for the Patriot Award</a>, which recognizes efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed. Upon learning her nomination was accepted, Pokornowski organized an award ceremony, which took place at Spacesaver’s headquarters in Fort Atkinson, WI.</p>

<p>Paired with Pokornowski in presenting the award to Rusch, was Retired Colonel Michael Williams, State Chair Emeritus of the <a href="https://www.esgr.mil/About-ESGR/Contact/Local-State-Pages/Wisconsin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wisconsin Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee (ESGR)</a>. According to Williams, the Patriot Award is only presented to employers who not only hire National Guard and Reserve members but demonstrate superior support to the military employee and their family.</p>

<p>Congratulations to Brent Rusch for this award! His efforts are a prime example of the team spirit that Spacesaver and its employees embody.</p>

<p>Military warehouses need to store a variety of items to keep operations running smoothly. This warehouse on a large military base stores parts and equipment for vehicle maintenance, and its inventory includes large and bulky items like tires and radiators as well as smaller parts like oil filters.</p>


<h3><small>The Challenge</small><br>A 20-Year-Old Mobilized Racking System</h3>
<p>To keep inventory organized while also providing convenient access to stored items, a <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-shelving/">Spacesaver mobile racking system</a> was installed in this military warehouse about 20 years ago. The system functioned well over the years, but, similar to the warehouse’s original thermostats and security systems, the mobile racking’s electronic components eventually needed an update. Spacesaver gave advance notice to warehouse staff that the electronics manufacturer would no longer make or support the components. </p>

	<h3><small>The Solution</small><br>Re-Investing in a Valuable Asset</h3>
<p>Staff use the Spacesaver system continually every day, so decision-makers at the base decided to proactively update its electronics system rather than face unplanned downtime. They opted for <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-shelving/mobile-shelving-modes-of-operation/#powered">Touch Technology™ Control</a>, which provides an intuitive user interface and allows staff to use a touch screen or remote control to open and close aisles. They also chose the patented <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-shelving/high-density-mobile-storage-safety-options/">Zero Force Sensor® safety control</a>, which uses beams of light to detect the presence of a person or an object in an aisle.</p>

<p>The nearby Spacesaver distributorship sent a crew of factory-certified technicians to replace the electronic components. The crew minimized disruption by leaving stored items on the racking and working around staff’s schedules.</p>

<p>Now the system works like new. The military saved money by refreshing and reinvesting in a proven asset, and the new control and safety options make the system safer and even more convenient to use.</p>

Updating Mobilized Pallet Racking in a Military Warehouse

<p>Keeping track of government property that’s used by hundreds of soldiers
    can be a challenge, especially when soldiers have to store their gear at
    home. That was the case for the North Carolina National Guard. With no
    central storage space for large mobility bags and other gear, soldiers
    had to take items home or store them in their vehicles, which led to missing
    gear and the resulting paperwork and lost time.</p>
<p>A study found that over 90% of Organizational Clothing and Individual
    Equipment (OCIE) military property losses were occurring in ranks E1 through
    E5. To keep soldiers’ valuable equipment secure and accounted for, leadership
    concluded that the most effective solution would be to create a locker
    room in each National Guard readiness center in the state.</p>
<p>Durable steel lockers help save time, streamline inventory processes,
    and prevent property loss.</p>

<p>The next step was to select the lockers. The project planning team had
    previously seen sample metal lockers and wire cages, but those products
    didn’t offer the features they were looking for. The local Spacesaver consultant
    worked with Spacesaver’s engineering team to design custom <a href="/products/locker-storage/freestyle-personal-storage-locker/">FreeStyle® Personal Storage Lockers</a> to
    accommodate the soldiers’ large mobility bags and other equipment. The
    lockers are 78” tall by 32” wide by 24” deep, with two shelves, two coat
    hooks, and a hasp lock. Each sturdy steel locker has a perforated mesh
    door to provide airflow while also obscuring the view of expensive equipment
    kept inside.</p>
<p>The custom Spacesaver lockers were a perfect fit, and they have now been
    installed in centers throughout the state. The new locker rooms have the
    potential to save the North Carolina National Guard millions of dollars
    and thousands of hours by preventing property loss and the associated paperwork.</p>

Prevent Military Property Loss

<p>A creative approach to product design helped improve readiness at this
    Air National Guard facility, where supply technicians needed to transfer
    fragile and expensive gear back and forth between helicopter pilots and
    the supply room. They wanted secure lockers that would open on the front
    and the back, so items could be deposited in the supply room and retrieved
    on the other side of the wall.</p>
<p>During a facility remodel, the architect worked with the local Spacesaver
    consultant to design pass-through gear lockers. Spacesaver’s custom manufacturing
    capabilities allow its engineers and manufacturing teams to combine different
    product features in unique ways. They were able to design “pass through”
    rear-loading gear lockers that are a hybrid of Spacesaver’s personal storage
    lockers and pass-through evidence lockers.</p>



<p>Pass-through gear lockers streamline workflows and minimize handling of
    delicate and expensive equipment.</p>

    <li>Technicians access the lockers through perforated mesh doors on the back.</li>
    <li>Now it’s easy to securely transfer expensive equipment.</li>
    <li>Pilots open the lockers to retrieve or replace gear.</li>
</ul>



<p>From the corridor accessed by the pilots, the lockers look fairly typical:
    they’re two-tiered, with louvered steel doors and a padlock hasp. Instead
    of a solid steel back, though, the lockers are equipped with double-mesh
    doors that open into the supply storage area.</p>
<p>The mesh doors provide technicians with direct access and visibility into
    the lockers, allowing them to retrieve and replace helmets, communications
    equipment, and other gear for repair or routine maintenance. </p>
