<p>Successful crime prevention is built on the ability of the police and
    community members to work together to identify and address current and
    potential issues. From this partnership, the community is made safer and
    in turn, officers’ workdays are less dangerous. A simple enough theory
    on the surface, but when you look deeper there are a lot of items that
    come into play; not the least of which is the systems, processes, and gear
    officers use to remain ready for patrol.</p>
<p>For the dedicated members of the Mishawaka, Indiana Police Department,
    being best prepared for the field meant having quick and easy access to
    the equipment they needed to handle whatever may come their way on a given
    day. For this, officers look to the solutions their respective commanding
    officers provide to protect said equipment, as well as the personal items
    they bring to and from the facility. One of these solutions – <a href="/products/locker-storage/freestyle-personal-storage-locker/">personal storage lockers</a> –

    <h3>The Impact of Inefficiency</h3>

<p>Being mentally and physically prepared for what may lie ahead in their
    shift is crucial for law enforcement officers. Much of this preparation

    <p>Prior to moving into their current facility, the Mishawaka PD was housed
    in a concrete block building built in the 1990s that featured outdated
    amenities throughout the space. This locker room was a strewn together,
    banged up collection of lockers mirroring those you’d find in a typical
    high school athletic room. Employing a one-size-fits-all aesthetic frozen
    in the decade the building was constructed, officers of varying heights
    and builds were finding it difficult to properly access features and accessories.
    This made getting ready for their shift a physically and mentally taxing
    activity, depleting their preparedness and morale.</p>
	<h3>Searching For Backup</h3>

<p>Upon purchase the of a 92,000-SF building in the heart of the city, Mishawaka
    city administrators set the plan to combine three of their services – City
    Hall, Utilities, and Police Department – into motion. While all three entities
    were in need of an upgrade in their space and solutions, a large focus
    was put on increasing support for the members of the Police Department,
    both as a recruiting tool and a retention strategy.</p>
    
    <p>Knowing more efficient options were required to securely store a growing assortment of officer gear and personal belongings, administrators surveyed regional case studies and conducted on-site visits to discover what solutions would suit the new facility. They found having the ability to walk through the spaces and obtain literature to reference after the fact, helped to move decision making along in terms of what options they felt would have a major impact on department operations and morale.</p>

<p>Parker, Colorado is a Denver suburb that has seen significant growth in recent years. When the department outgrew its old facility, the planning and design team for the new building involved officers in the design of the new and improved locker rooms to be sure they’d get what they needed.</p>
<p>Each police locker has plenty of hanging space for uniforms and street clothes, along with a separate drawer on the bottom with a specially-designed vest tray so bullet-proof vests can dry flat. Power outlets in each locker allow officers to charge their cell phones or portable radios, and a compartment for personal items locks separately to provide an additional layer of security. The lockers are even integrated with the building’s heating and cooling system for exceptional ventilation.</p>

Designing for Comfort and Function

<p>When Salt Lake City began planning a new public safety building in the heart of downtown, all services for the police and fire departments had to be housed under one roof. Space was limited in the expensive urban area, so the design team put a major emphasis on efficiency.</p>
<p>Like many other areas around the building, the motorcycle garage needed to make efficient use not only of limited space, but also of officers’ time. That’s why the design team opted to install custom <a href="/products/locker-storage/freestyle-personal-storage-locker/">FreeStyle® Personal Storage Lockers</a> from Spacesaver in the garage. By installing the lockers right next to the motorcycle parking spaces, officers could eliminate the extra time needed to walk back and forth between duty bag storage and the garage.</p>

<p>With increases in personnel and equipment, it’s no wonder that law enforcement
    agencies are running out of space in the one area that’s a “home away from
    home” for officers—police locker rooms. How do you design a locker room
    for growth when you don’t have an expanded footprint to work with? We give
    you three ideas to create space in your police locker rooms.</p>
    
    	<h3>Retrofitting locker benches</h3>

<p>At a department in Central Wisconsin, the police locker rooms were the
    place officers kept all of their equipment—including their body armor.
    The officers were used to hanging their armor on standard clothes hangers
    inside the lockers, even though they knew it wasn’t the best way to store
    this expensive and valuable equipment, as many body armor companies stress
    the importance of storing body armor flat. When stored on regular garment
    hangers, the ballistic panels of the armor can bunch up and create folds,
    and also allow the plastic straps of the vest to stretch beyond their memory
    point.</p>
    
    <p>In taking a closer look at the department’s existing lockers, it was determined
    that bench drawers—with a pullout tray for storing body armor—could be
    retrofit into the existing lockers at the fraction of the cost it would
    take to outfit both locker rooms with completely new lockers. The tray
    also allowed the officers to dry the vests out after a long shift, and
    the drawers had extra room at the bottom, which meant additional storage
    space for boots and shoes, which also lacked a place in the old lockers.</p>
    
    	<h3>Consider tiered locker options</h3>

<p>Florida’s City of Sunrise started to revamp their facility, and one goal
    was just a bit more important than the others—a gym that could be utilized
    by all of Sunrise’s personnel. The department was moving from several separate
    locations to one central location, which meant a substantial storage locker
    quantity would be needed—and certain ranks of personnel would need a larger
    locker than others.</p>
<p>To create a way for the department to increase the number of lockers in
    the same footprint and still retain the room’s ADA clearances, several
    banks of double-tier lockers were created, with benches that extended across
    each row of locker drawers. These two-tier lockers created enough space
    to give the appropriate senior personnel full-length lockers without having
    to completely restructure the space.</p>
    
    	<h3>Rethinking the bench</h3>

<p>When the East Mesa Reentry Facility in San Diego, California was struggling
    with an increase in personnel, they also had to deal with the fact that
    there wouldn’t be extra space in the police locker rooms to accommodate
    the increase. In addition to increasing the number of lockers, they also
    needed to increase the width of each locker—eating up the space that had
    been available for freestanding bench seating.</p>
<p>With a bit of creative thinking from our engineering department, we worked
    with the Center to create a breadboard bench that could retract into the
    locker. After several tests for weight loads and other improvements, the
    benches were installed in East Mesa’s locker rooms. The bench reduced the
    depth of each locker by 12″, allowing the facility to fit the needed number
    of lockers into the same footprint.</p>
