<p>This past Veteran’s Day, Spacesaver acknowledged our employees who have served our country, in addition to providing a token of our appreciation for the sacrifice they made. On December 14, one of these valued employees had the opportunity to return the favor to both the company and their respective supervisor. </p>

<h2>How It Started</h2>

<p>Spacesaver’s team of storage experts comprises individuals of all walks of life. For some it is their first job and for others it may be their last, but for one particular employee it most certainly is not their only job, and the other is one to be proud of.</p>

<p>
Just over a year ago, Captain Britta Pokornowski – a member of the Michigan Army National Guard assigned to the Headquarters Company, 107th Engineer Battalion, Ishpeming, MI – joined Spacesaver’s Product Engineering department, led by Brent Rusch, Product Engineering Manager at Spacesaver.</p>

<h3>Answering the Call</h3>
<p>Fully honoring the Guard’s motto of being “Always Ready, Always There”, Pokornowski was required to take leave from her day-to-day at Spacesaver to train and serve with her unit; a fact that Rusch and the rest of her team understood and appreciated. So, when the time came for her to answer the call, she knew she could leave with the confidence that her team at Spacesaver headquarters would hold down the Fort until her return.</p>

<p>“Brent (Rusch) and my teammates have been great about being flexible and covering my duties while I am out for training,” Captain Pokornowski stated. “They have been especially helpful during the additional training requirements this year.”</p>

<h3>An Awarding Reward</h3>
<p>Taking into consideration Rusch’s willingness to help encourage her ability to make an impact both in the office and with her unit, Pokornowski wanted to find a way to honor his efforts. Knowing there were several programs in place through the military to do just that, she <a href="https://www.esgr.mil/Employer-Awards/Patriot-Award" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nominated Rusch for the Patriot Award</a>, which recognizes efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed. Upon learning her nomination was accepted, Pokornowski organized an award ceremony, which took place at Spacesaver’s headquarters in Fort Atkinson, WI.</p>

<p>Paired with Pokornowski in presenting the award to Rusch, was Retired Colonel Michael Williams, State Chair Emeritus of the <a href="https://www.esgr.mil/About-ESGR/Contact/Local-State-Pages/Wisconsin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wisconsin Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee (ESGR)</a>. According to Williams, the Patriot Award is only presented to employers who not only hire National Guard and Reserve members but demonstrate superior support to the military employee and their family.</p>

<p>Congratulations to Brent Rusch for this award! His efforts are a prime example of the team spirit that Spacesaver and its employees embody.</p>

Doing Our Part While They Do Theirs

<p>Sounds like a great choice of host city for this year’s EdSpaces 2022 conference! And the nearly 2500 attendees and 130 fellow exhibitors Spacesaver’s team had a chance to meet with at the three-day affair certainly agreed. Let’s take a look at the sights, sounds, and happenings from the perspective of those who were there.</p>

<h3>Sorting Out the Sessions</h3>
<p>Today’s classrooms are all about providing room for growth for their students, and many of this year’s sessions were geared toward opening up the space for versatile learning opportunities. School districts are encouraging administrators to utilize more efficient storage for useful items, purge unnecessary materials, and focus on utilizing outside storage in their design process to free up space within their classrooms. Four driving pillars of this shift in the market are making learning spaces:</p>

<ul>
 	<li>Adaptable &amp; Functional</li>
 	<li>Inviting and Comfortable</li>
 	<li>Learner Centered</li>
 	<li>Though overall this edition of the conference seemed slower paced than years past, the majority of furniture displayed was mobile, flexible, and ready for action</li>
</ul>

<p>This year’s sessions featured a strong focus on fostering student engagement throughout the building. From utilizing cubbies to store student supplies and belongings in lieu of combination lockers to reduce anxiety, to providing more inclusive athletic prep areas, to including colorful spaces to encourage creativity, administrators have the health and well-being of their students top of mind in the design process.</p>

<p>In addition, while regulations and restrictions from COVID are beginning to lighten up, the impact it had on educational fixtures and processes have changed the market for good. Hygienic practices that used to be appreciated are now non-negotiable and heavily monitored, making easier to clean surfaces that are moisture resistant and feature no edge banding the new standard.</p>
<h3>New Flexible Shelving Units You Say?</h3>
<p>We rolled out (pun intended) our new <strong>Flexible Shelving</strong> units at EdSpaces 2022, featuring exposed and concealed casters (pun justified) to allow for use where it’s needed when it’s needed. </p>

<p>Our booth showcased two of the many finish options of the steel-constructed, durable unit: one, a more classic wood look intended to pair with existing storage options; and the other, an acrylic finish in an eye-catching blue. One of these units will be donated for use by a lucky consumer. We’ll be launching the product in early December, so keep an eye out for more information on how to be one of the first to be a part of the comprehensive release.</p>

<h3>The Collective Observation</h3>
Here is what we saw and heard from sessions, at the booth, and everywhere in between:
<ul>
 	<li>It was clear that attendees’ main focus was on getting to the sessions being offered</li>
 	<li>Exhibitors we spoke to also said attendees seemed to have a set agenda for who they wanted to see; very few people – mostly dealers looking for the latest and greatest – were simply just “making the rounds”</li>
 	<li>This year’s edition of the conference featured more dealers and distributors than end users, we spoke with some architects but did not see many general contractors present</li>
</ul>

A Recap of the Events of the EdSpaces 2022 Conference

<h2>When providing tangible products to consumers, completing a transaction can sometimes be left at the mercy of your method of delivery. </h2>
<p>Over the past two-plus years, executing any method of delivery has been a bit of a challenge (to say the least) for supply chain professionals. However, there have been some bright spots in the cloud of COVID-related delays. In a recent issue of <a href="https://scw-mag.com/profiles/spacesaver/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Supply Chain World Magazine</a>, Spacesaver was given the opportunity to shine a light on their proven process.</p>

<p>We’ve installed around 400,000 of our systems in a variety of vertical markets, including education, public safety, museums, indoor agriculture, libraries, the military, corporate offices, healthcare, government, and industrial partners,”</span> stated Stephanie Congdon, Director of Supply Chain at Spacesaver. <span style="font-weight: bold;">“One of the biggest takeaways over the past two years is that you need to be prepared.”</span></p>

<p>To mitigate against supply chain challenges, a major focus for Spacesaver in the last few years has been the successful implementation of its employee-led Continuous Improvement (CI) program. This program allows team members to share the first-hand experience they’ve gained in every step of the process with managers to ensure products are manufactured and delivered as efficiently and effectively as possible, and partners are up-to-speed on the status of their orders.</p>

<p>Clear, timely, and transparent communication with our distribution and their customers was also key to our success in navigating supply chain disruptions,”</span> Stephanie added. <span style="font-weight: bold;">“Bad news does not get better over time, so freely sharing updates from our suppliers and any adverse impacts that may result proved to be essential in mitigating issues.”</span></p>

<p>Our standard safety system works like the safety protection of an automatic garage door. An infrared light beam sweeps for obstructions close to the floor along the entire length of the carriage. If something interrupts the light beam, all carriage movement stops.</p>
<p>If needed, an additional light beam can be located around waist height. This is convenient in settings that are equipped with pull-out reference shelves.</p>

	<h3>Side to Side: Aisle-Entry Sensor</h3>
<p>This add-on option consists of a projected beam of light that runs across the aisle entry instead of along the carriage. Entering an open aisle breaks the beam, which stops system movement. When someone leaves an aisle, they will need to press the “Reset” icon on the control head at that aisle to return the system to normal operation.</p>

<h3>The Ultimate in Safety: Zero Force Sensor®</h3>
<p>This safety feature is similar to the aisle entry sensor, but it projects many more light beams and requires no effort to reset the system.
