Secure Locker Storage Increases Efficiency

Bensalem Police Department

Before the Bensalem Police Department moved into their new department headquarters a few years ago, Director of Public Safety Frederick Harran admits the department’s storage had gotten a little out of hand.

“It was basically a disaster,” Harran says. “Equipment was lying around, and officers had to keep valuable equipment in their cars. We just didn’t have the room.”

With over 100 officers and the distinction of being one of the most prestigious departments in their region of northeast Philadelphia, Harran and his team realized they needed a storage overhaul for their locker rooms, record room, evidence storage areas, and weapons storage areas. They connected with Diversified Storage Solutions, Inc. (DSSI), an authorized Spacesaver distributor, to see how they could best take advantage of the new space from an efficiency and security perspective.

"When people come in and have better equipment to work with, that helps them on the street. They work a little harder, and are a little happier—and that translates into doing good work for the public."

What transpired was an integrated approach to Bensalem’s storage. Evidence storage that once was overcrowded and disorganized now is “moved with your index finger,” Harran says. Bensalem’s file storage—the area that Harran says needed to be the most secure—is easier to access than ever before thanks to a high-density mobile storage system with security code access. However, the area that has seen the greatest change at Bensalem is the men and women’s locker room, thanks to the secure locker storage that was implemented.

“The officers really appreciate the locker room space,” Harran says. “It’s about as modern as you can get, and it’s been a huge savings for us.” While it may not seem like something as simple as secure locker storage could contribute to an increase in department morale, Harran is quick to say that’s exactly what the new system has done. “When people come in and have better equipment to work with, that helps them on the street,” he says. “They work a little harder, and are a little happier—and that translates into doing good work for the public.”
