A powered Spacesaver system is central to this large pharmaceutical laboratory’s efficient operation. The company employs a full-time attendant who uses the system to retrieve and stock items like chemicals and lab supplies, and the system is in near-constant use every business day and even on some weekends. The company also has two more powered Spacesaver systems in retention rooms that store paper documents like instrument qualifications.

All three of the systems functioned well for decades, but, just like other electronic systems in the facility, the electronic components eventually needed an update. Space-saving Storage for Lab Consumables, Chemicals, and Equipment

A major pharmaceutical company updates Spacesaver powered mobile systems.

<p>This confidential client was building a new pharmaceutical research and development laboratory on a campus of multiple buildings. Staff worked with a team of architects to design all aspects of the new lab, and one crucial component was storing chemical reagents in the safest and most efficient manner possible.</p>

<h3>The Challenge</h3>
<p>The project design team knew that storage would play just as crucial a role in the lab’s safe and efficient operation as other lab furniture and equipment. They still hoped to minimize the space needed for storage, though, because space designated for storage is space that could be used for experimental work, offices, or other uses.</p>
<p>The design team had three main requirements for the storage cabinets:</p>
<ul>
<li>Provide ventilation (prescribed number of air exchanges per hour)</li>
<li>Provide visibility to stored items to streamline workflows</li>
<li>Occupy the least amount of space possible</li>
</ul>
<p>The architects had worked with the local Spacesaver consultant on other laboratory storage projects in the past, so they called on him again to advise on the project. </p>


<h3>The Solution</h3>
<p>The local Spacesaver consultant worked with Spacesaver’s in-house engineering team to design “cabinets” that were actually 4-Post shelving units with framed doors. The glass doors provide visibility to promote efficient retrieval and inventory.</p>
<p>The cabinets are connected to the building’s HVAC system via a ventilation system at the top of each cabinet. The flexible ductwork draws air up and into the cabinets via perforated panels at the cabinets’ bases. The architect specified the amount of perforation required to ensure proper airflow, and Spacesaver’s engineers and manufacturing teams designed and built the panels to those specifications.</p>

	<h3>The Result</h3>
<p>The result is a compact, efficient system that keeps stored pharmaceutical chemicals organized while also keeping the lab clean and protecting staff from potentially harmful fumes.</p>

<p>The USNS <em>Comfort</em> is a 1000-bed hospital ship that has been deployed on humanitarian missions around the globe. It most recently docked in Manhattan to help relieve New York City’s overburdened healthcare system during the COVID-19 crisis, and Spacesaver systems are playing a crucial role in keeping the ship’s pharmacy and sterile supply storage areas organized and safe.</p>

<h3 style="margin-top: 0;">Safety in Limited Space</h3>

<p>Although the Comfort is a massive ship with a displacement of nearly 70,000
    tons, interior storage space is limited. As with any hospital, areas that
    are taken up by storage are spaces that could be used for patient care.
    But the safety of the crew must be a primary consideration as well, and
    staff were concerned about the storage systems in the Comfort’s pharmacy
    and sterile storage areas. In the pharmacy, a competitor’s high-density
    storage system slid along the rails unpredictably when the ship was underway.
    In the sterile supply area, a competitor’s wire shelving system on an overhead
    track posed similar risks.</p>

<h3  style="margin-top: 0;">Custom Engineered for Safety</h3>

<p>The Spacesaver consultant at the ship’s homeport in Norfolk, Virginia,
    worked with the ship’s medical staff and Spacesaver’s engineers to design
    <a
    href="/products/high-density-mobile-shelving/">safer high-density storage solutions</a>for the pharmacy and sterile supply
        areas. The resulting Spacesaver systems use roller-guide carriages with
        in-rail anti-tip, as well as synchro drive and mechanical clutch brakes.
        The systems are locked down with an open “underway” aisle with rail-locking
        bars at the base and custom overhead brackets that attach to the tops of
        the shelving to prevent movement.</p>
        
        <h3>Creative Installation Process</h3>

<p>Installing a <a href="/products/high-density-mobile-shelving/">high-density mobile system</a> on
    a ship presented special challenges. The rails were bolted to a plate that
    was welded to the floor, and an aluminum floor was dropped in and secured
    between the rails. Metal ramps were welded to the rails to eliminate tripping
    hazards and provide convenient access for carts.</p>
    
    <h3>Securing Sterile Supplies &amp; Pharmaceuticals</h3>

<p>To keep stored items organized and secure, most shelves have bin fronts
    and dividers, and some shelves are secured with tambour doors. Stationary
    carriages are fitted with shelving instead of end panels to allow for quick
    access to frequently used items.</p>

Medical Supply Storage on a Navy Hospital Ship

<p>Space is always at a premium in hospitals, and regulations for hazardous
    drug storage have created an even greater space crunch in hospitals’ inpatient
    pharmacies. These pharmacies are usually “landlocked” inside hospitals
    with no room to expand.</p>
<p>Although every pharmacy is different, Spacesaver products are typically
    used in two areas: they store hazardous drugs efficiently and securely
    in the new rooms that must be constructed to bring inpatient pharmacies
    into compliance with USP 800 regulations, and they also help recover space
    that was lost elsewhere in the pharmacies when these rooms were constructed.</p>
