When a Midwestern cancer treatment center expanded, better medical supply room storage was at the top of the staff’s wish list.

The Challenge

The primary goal for the addition was to incorporate chemotherapy infusion areas and new exam rooms to allow more patients to be treated at the facility. Better medical supply room storage was a top priority, as well, because supply storage in the original facility hadn’t been thoughtfully built in. As a result, staff had been struggling with inadequate medical supply storage for more than ten years.

The planning team knew that treating more patients would require even more medical supplies like tubing, bags, and gauze. They also knew that storage for these items can take up a lot of space.

In order to maximize the space available for infusion rooms and other patient care areas, the team would need to optimize storage space. They also wanted to save staff time by locating all the chemotherapy supplies in one well-organized place.

The Solution

The planning team had seen Spacesaver systems in other hospital supply room storage areas, so they called on their local Spacesaver consultant for insights and advice.

The consultant suggested designing a long, narrow medical supply room, about 15 feet by 25 feet, with a Spacesaver high-density mobile system fitted with 4-post shelving and wire decking. The room is secured with a keypad lock to prevent unauthorized access to the medical supply room.
