Library Lockers Help Protect Special Collections

Securing personal belongings while patrons conduct research.

The Challenge: Keep Personal Belongings Out of Special Collections Area

When this major urban library underwent a complete interior renovation, staff wanted to improve public access to the expanded special collections area while limiting the risk of lost or damaged collection items. They decided that prohibiting food, drinks, bags, and backpacks would help prevent such loss or damage.

The design team recognized the need to provide secure temporary storage for prohibited items near the special collections area. They wanted lockers that would be:

  • Secure
  • ADA-compliant
  • Integrated with the building’s new interior design
  • Sturdy and durable to minimize maintenance headaches

The Solution: Library Lockers from Spacesaver

The design team chose Spacesaver’s Day Use Lockers encased in custom wooden doors and surrounds. They opted for two banks of two-tiered lockers in “island” configurations, which provide convenient work surfaces in addition to functional storage. They also wanted to avoid issues that can arise with lost keys, so they chose a keypad lock with an integrated, easy-to-use handle.

Spacesaver provided shelving throughout the newly renovated library, so the design team appreciated the opportunity to simplify the procurement process by purchasing lockers from the same manufacturer as the shelving.

Touchless Lockers and Other Library Locker Options

Library lockers consist of sturdy steel frames, full overlay doors, and secure locks.
