Making it Fit – Oklahoma State University’s Football Equipment Storage Challenge

Making it Fit

Oklahoma State University’s Football Equipment Storage Challenge

Oklahoma State University (OSU) was renovating their stadium in phases. The biggest challenge for OSU was finding a way to store all of the football equipment in the football equipment room with the allotted square footage. The easy decision here was to go with a Spacesaver mobile storage system that compacts the storage into less space. Making sure all of the equipment could fit within the room was important. So was designing custom solutions that made it easy to visually see the equipment at a glance with easy access.

A few of the custom solutions that Spacesaver and Steve Story of Southwest Solutions Group created were inspired from different applications found in retail and even from healthcare. OSU originally stored the 200 footballs that they kept on hand during the season in boxes. Boxes simply took way too much space. As shown in the images, we created a custom solution that allowed the balls to be stored in a custom-designed feeder. The footballs were protected, had easy access and would never roll off the shelving.

In addition to the balls, belts can be a tedious item to keep organized. There are approximately 250 game day belts that have to be dealt with in three colors and several different sizes. These used to be rolled up and stacked on shelves. Now the belts are well organized, hanging on racks that pull out for quick access and easy visibility of the different sizes.

Both the players and the trainers use personal equipment lockers. The lockers provide the necessary ventilation for the stored football gear. The hanger bracket within the locker ensures items hung have adequate separation for proper ventilation to reduce odor. The storage lockers also come with custom organization for the flexibility to have different configurations for different accessories, which can be changed from year-to-year.

Not shown is an easy access “check-out” counter where the players come before each game to request their game equipment. The equipment is then picked up from their individually labelled cubby, making issuing game-day equipment efficient.
