<p>Each year, more states are continuing to pass legislations legalizing
    medical and recreational marijuana use for their residents. To date, 21
    states have legalized recreational use and 37 have approved medical use,
    with even more looking to do the same in the coming years.</p>
<p>Along with adding new states to the list of legalized entities, legislations
    also benefit operations in states where licensing was previously granted
    by expanding operational parameters and/or offering additional licenses

<p>Let’s start by taking a look at some of the most recent additions to the
    approved-states list:</p>

<li>Passed on November 9, 2022, and effective on December 8, 2022, a Missouri
    legislation permitted recreational cannabis use in the state and prohibited
    discrimination on the basis of medical cannabis use.</li>
<li>On December 1, 2022, Rhode Island became one of five states that have
    transitioned from medical dispensaries to accommodate adult-use sales.
    The market is expected to generate $80 million in sales in the first year
    and $300 million by the fourth year, according to projections.</li>
<li>The first legal dispensary for recreational marijuana in New York rung
    up its first sale on Thursday, December 29, 2022, opening up what is expected
    to be one of the country’s most lucrative markets for cannabis.</li>
<li>On January 26, 2023, Mississippi became the 37th state to legalize medical
    use.</li>
<li>Beginning July 1, 2023, Maryland will be the 20th state to legalize cannabis
    for adult use.</li>
</ul>

<p>On October 17, 2018, the federal Cannabis Act made Canada the second country
    in the world to formally legalize the cultivation, possession, acquisition,
    and consumption of cannabis and its by-products. Since this Act, Canada
    has become home to roughly 3,700 cannabis stores and 920 active federal
    cannabis licenses, according to MJBizDaily.</p>
<p>In 2021, Canadians bought CA$3.83 billion (US$2.81 billion) worth of recreational
    cannabis from licensed stores. That figure jumped to CA$4.52 billion (US$3.35
    billion) in 2022; a 17.9% growth year-over-year, according to data released
    by Statistics Canada. This sales growth was a direct result of an increase
    in the number of licensed cannabis stores in Canada.</p>
	<h3>What Could Be In-Store For 2023</h3>

<p>As mentioned earlier, states are pushing and will continue to push for
    legalization and expansion within their territories. Below are details
    on four of the states attempting to pass regulations this year.</p>

<li>On March 7, Oklahoma voters will participate in a special election solely
    focused on the legalization of recreational cannabis.</li>
<li>Passed through the state House in 2022, the state of Minnesota is making
    strides toward approving recreational use by adults.</li>
<li>The state of Ohio is building momentum to for a ballot initiative in its
    November elections.</li>
<li>In Pennsylvania, there is a resurgence of support for the legalization
    of adult-use cannabis, with hopes of getting it on the ballot this year.</li>
</ul>

The unveiling is always glorious, everything they were looking for, and they live happily ever after.</p>
<p>This year at <a href="https://mjbizconference.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MJBizCon</a>, Spacesaver had the opportunity to flip the script on attendees that had the pleasure of taking an iconic ride down the escalator from the second floor to the main attraction (<a href="/products/vertical-grow-mobile-system/#accessory">a new product launch</a>) in our booth.</p>
<p>So, sit back and relax as we tell you the fairytale story of Spacesaver’s trip to MJBizCon 2022, where we provided a grand reveal to some potential suitors of our own.</p>


<h3>Setting the Stage</h3>
<p><a href="https://mjbizconference.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MJBizCon – the #1 global cannabis business conference and tradeshow</a> – is held annually at the Las Vegas Convention Center and showcases over 1,400 exhibitors, nearly 320,000 SF of exhibit space, 140 speakers, and endless networking and partnership-building opportunities.</p>
<p>While attendance dipped over the past couple of years, this year’s show trended toward the 35,000-attendee mark that it traditionally attracts. Attendees comprised a mix of representatives from hands-on operations including cultivation, extraction/processing, manufacturing, and retail, as well as executives without direct contact with plants including entrepreneurs, inventors, start-ups, private equity investors and VCs.</p>

<h3>The Pulse of the People</h3>
<p>We’ll go into more detail about the ‘Belle of the Ball’ later, but first let’s take a look into what we saw and heard from the rest of this year’s party guests. Amongst the merrymakers of marijuana, the atmosphere was one celebrating the progress of 2022 and hope for continued growth in 2023. The advent of three new states becoming legalized (Ohio, Pennsylvania, Minnesota) and additional licenses being offered in already legalized states will bolster this hope and, provide an influx of demand for solutions to support growth.</p>

<p>The exhibit space was segmented according to the growing stage each respective company supported. One thing that was clear among attendees throughout the hall, was a driven search of knowledge about the solutions in front of them. In our neck of the woods, there were several new vendors (domestic and international) looking to stake their claim with cultivators testing the market. Some provided product presentations, others guided tours of their space and offerings, and more blended the two by allowing visitors to test their products firsthand.</p>

Located between fully lit GROW Mobile carriages, prospects were drawn into our booth (located at the bottom of a main escalator) to look at the Crosswalk.</p>

<p>Designed to improve safety, efficiency, and access for cultivators servicing second-tier or higher plants and systems, the Crosswalk provides users with a raised working station that securely integrates with new and <a href="/products/vertical-grow-racks/">existing GROW uprights</a> and can be utilized during all stages of indoor cultivation. Some attendees we spoke with liked the prospect of getting an entire system from veg to dry from one vendor, as it would make the purchasing process easier.</p>

HIGHlights from MJBizCon 2022

<h2>“Grow up” is a widely used phrase for suggesting someone correct the activity/attitude they are displaying and generally carries a predominately negative connotation. </h2>

<p>For a Missouri cannabis cultivator, hearing the phrase from their local Spacesaver consultant served as a source of inspiration. Facing strict regulations regarding the amount of canopy space that could be utilized in their facility, the organization was able to go vertical with their grow operation, saving valuable floor space for access, storage, and future expansion of operations. </p>

<p>Here are some of the top challenges indoor cultivators face and how Spacesaver’s GROW Mobile systems are designed to address them.</p>

<h3>Cold Call, Welcoming Opportunity</h3>
<a href="/company-about-spacesaver/spacesaver-partners/">Spacesaver’s network of local storage experts</a>, which spans North America, prides themselves on being at the forefront of the newest developments in the industries they serve. In the case of Missouri’s legalization of medical marijuana cultivation by ballot initiative in 2018, Spacesaver’s local consultant was certainly keeping a close eye on regulatory advancements. As soon as a list of approved cultivators was released in late 2020, the consultant began calling new licensees to help add efficient systems to their new operation. One of those calls connected Spacesaver with the Cultivation Director for Bloom Medicinals, a Kansas City-area cannabis producer.

<p>Two considerations were clear to Spacesaver’s expert when assessing the potential Bloom’s facility. First, they must adhere to Missouri’s regulation that limits canopy space to 30,000 SF. Second, providing flexibility would be key to address the inconsistent layout of the facility’s rooms.</p>

<p>Prior to this project, Bloom had only operated with single-tier systems. Through several virtual meetings (in accordance with COVID protocols) with key partners including architects, installers, and Bloom’s team, our consultant was able to educate the group on the value of growing vertically and create a configuration that optimized available space. Utilizing <a href="/products/vertical-grow-mobile-system/">two-tiered GROW Mobile Storage Systems</a>, our consultant was able to help Bloom maximize yield, improve operations, and preserve space for future growth.</p>


<h3>Leaving Plants High and Dry</h3>
To help support their cultivators from germination to dispensary, Bloom was given a prototype of <a href="/products/cannabis-drying-system/">Spacesaver’s GROW Drying System</a> including a mobile cart and one 12’ tall rack system. While it is substantial in size, the system covers only one tenth of the designated drying area, leaving room for versatility and growth. <p>Their challenge with achieving this goal, is that the state-issued cultivation license limits the footprint of their grow area to 3,000 SF. This is where our team came in.</p>

<h2>When a researcher from Princeton and his business partner rented space in a large warehouse in Trenton, New Jersey, they had a mission to see how well they could grow leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables on indoor hydroponic systems. Choosing the Best Cannabis Grow Racks

<p>When a cannabis cultivation firm acquired an 80-year-old building in Oregon and set out to convert it to a modern cannabis grow, the design team wanted to optimize space throughout the facility. Mobile Cultivation Racks for an Innovative Cannabis Facility

<p>One example is this facility in the San Francisco Bay Area, where staff
    are using Spacesaver’s ActivRAC® Mobilized Storage System to <a href="https://www.spacesaver.com/portfolio-posts/cannabis-grow-facility/">gain significantly higher yields in the flowering rooms</a>.
    Originally designed for heavy-duty industrial applications, these ActivRAC
    systems are 42 feet long and consist of two levels of shelving mounted
    on “carriages” that move along rails installed along the floor.</p>
<p>The ActivRAC systems eliminate wasted space, encourage airflow, and allow
    for optimal light exposure, which maximizes the plants’ bud formation.
    Mechanical-assist handles allow staff to easily open aisles so they can
    tend the plants, and the aisles are wide enough for staff to work on both
    sides of each growing area.</p>

    staff to minimize disruption and downtime, timing the ActivRAC installations
    to coincide with the end of each room’s harvest.</p>
