Many law enforcement agencies store their evidence on static bulk shelving with particleboard decking. This is great for heavy items, but the inches wasted by tall supports and awkward shelf-lengths quickly add up to a lot of wasted space.

Take a Phased Approach
90% Increase in Storage
This layout is common for property and evidence rooms for small- to medium-size police departments. In this layout, the oversize wide-span shelving is not helping conserve any space. In this example, the 72″ -wide shelves mean that 12.5″-long bankers boxes of evidence can fit, but there is still plenty of empty space on the shelves that can’t be used. This gives the original layout a capacity of just 520 boxes. Increase Space in phases by switching out the bulk racking for more efficient 4-post shelving units that are 42″ long, three boxes could fit on a shelf for a total of 21 boxes per shelf. Purchasing this upgraded shelving in four phases allows the department to gain storage space incrementally without creating budgetary constraints. With optimized shelving, this layout allows for 987 boxes to be stored.
Plan for the future
If the department anticipates further evidence storage growth in the coming years, it can start planning for future mobile storage. A reorientation of the room can yield an increase of 22% from the original configuration.
At a later date, in the existing facility or a new one, the shelving units can be mounted onto a system of rails and carriages that further increase the capacity of the space. Paired with the optimized shelving, the mobile storage layout allows for a capacity of 1,155 boxes.
